These are the questions 2017 Envirofair co-ordinator Jo Wallace is putting to the community as she attempts to form Taree’s first recyclable maze.

‘Taree’s Recycled Maze Project’ is a community-based project where schools, groups, business and individuals can create a panel out of recycled materials. 

The panels will come together to form a maze that will make its debut at the Envirofair on June 10 at Taree Park.

The size of the maze will depend on how many panels/installations are produced. 

The panel’s theme is entirely up to the participants.

“Taree’s Envirofair has always been a platform for raising awareness about how our actions impact the environment, whether in the home, community or at work,” Jo said. 

“It’s also about thinking beyond our local and national environments and considering our international impact.

“A maze is something people become interested in instantly. It’s entertainment and it works the brain by trying to get out!” 

Jo said fantastic works of art can be made with recycled materials such as cardboard, plastic lids, plastic containers, newspapers and more. 

“Your wall must include 80 per cent of items that would otherwise be sent to land fill or be recycled,” explained Jo.

“There’s a lot of satisfaction that comes by creating something out of what people would call garbage.” 

Jo said the purpose of the maze is to make people “think twice” and become aware of the different ways you can reuse different products instead of sending them to landfill. 

“It’s about thinking about what we are actually throwing away – because that piece of plastic it doesn’t break down,” Jo said. 

“Things don’t only have to be used once.”

Jo was inspired by works of art she has seen created using bottle lids. 

She also urges people to look up ‘The Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ – the patch is a vast collection of waste floating in the Pacific Ocean.

Made up of materials that won’t break down like plastics, the patch has become a deadly threat to marine animals.
