Out in the garden there
Shaming the rose and lily
For she is twice as fair.'
These words from 'Silent Worship' (Handel-Somervell) were quoted by Hugh McCrindle OAM, and were one of many tributes presented in honour of Joan Saxby, recently retired accompanist of the Manning Valley Choral Society (MVCS).
Following 35 years of continual service, 'Dame Joan' made the difficult decision to 'retire' from her beloved singing group at the end of 2016.
In recognition of her outstanding contribution to the MVCS, a celebratory dinner was held at the beautiful home and grounds of long-standing member Rowena Meldrum and her husband Ross.
Attendees included present and past choristers, representing three decades of choral tradition, and were warmly welcomed by MVCS vice president George Dan.
Accompanied by her husband Roy, daughter Louise, grand-daughter Anike, son Brian and his wife Cara, Joan was duly revered in verse, song and accolades befitting her decades of service.
Robyn Rankin (current president) spoke of Joan's endurance, patience and talent, Merri Rumble recalled several amusing and delightful anecdotes from her many years of friendship with Joan, and limericks featuring Joan were composed and delivered by choral society members throughout the evening, accompanied by much laughter.
'Blue Moon' was sung by the MVCS as their vocal tribute to Joan, accompanied by Pam Archer.
A highlight of the function was the cutting of a celebratory cake, created and designed by Choral Society member, Katrina Hall, and featuring the musical notes from Joan's favourite song 'All The Things You Are' by Jerome Kern.
Joan graciously responded to her accolades in her usual humorous and genial manner, reflecting on her time as accompanist, and the many wonderful people and times she had experienced.
In appreciation for all Joan has done and meant to the choir, Joan was awarded the perpetual 2017 Mike Collins Memorial Award for her outstanding service to the Choral Society. Joan was also presented with vouchers for use at the Manning Entertainment Centre.
MVCS will miss Joan, but extend its best wishes, and encourage her to now enjoy her free Thursday evenings!
