The main purpose of the event was to showcase the new playing uniforms and junior representative kit as well as special guests, CJ Bruton and Aja Parham, providing motivation to the players for the long competition ahead which starts over the weekend of March 11/12 and runs all the way to the finals series in August.
Referees were also acknowledged for the important part they in the sport and under the guidance of referee coordinator and coach, Stephen Campbell, their ranks continue to grow.
Plans have also been drawn for the future expansion of Saxby’s Stadium. Although much work needs to be done before the first sod of soil may be turned it was good to have the architects from Melbourne in attendance to discuss the plans and answer questions.
The under 12 girls and boys and 18 girls start their campaigns in Tamworth next weekend, while the other Taree Tornadoes teams in the Northern Junior League and Country Premier League hit the court later in the month.
Taree will compete against teams from Canberra Capitals, Illawarra Hawks, Newcastle Hunters, Western Reds, Coffs Harbour Suns, Gosford City Rebels and the Maitland Mustangs in the U14G division of the Molten Waratah Country Premier League and their progress will be watched with interest as they take on the big guns of Country NSW Basketball.
The junior and senior competitions on Tuesday afternoon/night will be back again next week for round three of their respective competitions as teams begin to settle into their work and set course for the finals, which are set down for June.
As March has now rolled around individual players with a Basketball NSW registration, which expired last month and all new players should have settled their fees and if that is not the case it should be given a high priority.
The current fee for seniors is $80 with players not turning 18 in 2017 having a registration cost of $65.
School basketball will be back at Saxby’s Stadium tomorrow with games from 8am to 2pm for players from kindergarten to year 10 enjoying all this great game has to offer.
Spaces are still available for children interested in giving basketball a try and the cost is just $5 per game plus Basketball NSW registration.
Young players wishing to work on the fundamentals should get along to Saxby’s Stadium on Mondays from 4pm to 5.30 for the Magic Monday skills sessions designed to help new and returning players with the basics of the game to raise the enjoyment level when they hit the court for competition games. Saxby’s Stadium is the home of Taree Basketball and details about all competitions can be obtained on 6551 7456, by email tareebasketball@hotmail.com, on the net at www.taree.basketball.net.au or track down Taree Basketball on Facebook.
