The skies above Gloucester have been buzzing with the sound of helicopters over the past few days as the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) set up a central depot at Gloucester Showground.
Teams of firefighters have been stationed at the showground, which is acting as a central location for the fires in the area.
A spokesperson for the RFS said the active fires at Giro and Mount Mooney are in remote areas requiring aviation work to access them, therefore the community will continue to see the helicopters.
Gloucester has been chosen as a central location where the aircraft can refuel and teams can transported into the fire zones.
Several different helicopters are being used; some to wrench firefighters into remote locations, some for water bombing and some for remote mapping, so they can stay on top of the fires.
The RFS have stressed that although the fires are not expected to affect homes, the public needs to be aware that there are still fires burning; some which will continue to burn for many days.
“The threat has eased and we aren’t expecting bad conditions like before, but until we get 5 or more days of rain, the fires will continue to burn,” the spokesperson said.
