The president of the Old Bar and Manning Point Chamber of Commerce, Carole Isaacs, says she can hardly believe it.
After two years of struggle and preparation and a public street protest, Ms Isaacs was invited to a meeting with MidCoast Council staff on January 31. There she learned that local member Stephen Bromhead had advised a sum of money would be provided for the project if council would match the funding.
The work should commence on April 1, carried out as a "Work for the Dole" project by Tursa and Nortec, under the supervision of MidCoast Council. The Old Bar community will be very pleased with the efforts of our local member and MidCoast Council when this project is completed.
Seniors' Festival event scuttled
The Old Bar Beach Community Technology Centre Inc. (CTC) has conducted a Seniors' Week program (now NSW Senior's Festival) for 11 of the past 12 years. Mostly this has been possible because of State government funding secured through the Community Connect Services Association (CCSA), formerly known as the Community Technology Centres Association, although sometimes funded by a direct grant.
The program has generally been TechnoSeniors and delivered a range of technology related tuition on computers, mobile phones, digital photography and various CentreLink and other government services.
The CCSA again applied for funding for this year and the Old Bar CTC was well advanced in dropping a program into place but were advised on February 7 that funding was not forthcoming. This means that there will be no TechnoSeniors event in Old Bar and probably Tuncurry, Nabiac, Tea Gardens and many other CTCs in rural and regional NSW.
The president of the Old Bar CTC Ian Dimmock said he and his committee are bitterly disappointed after having spent time on Monday afternoon February 6, putting the final touches to the proposed program. "We had sought and expected a mere $1000 to host this event, consisting of five three hour sessions. For a small operation like ours, grants such as this are very important as we operate very close to zero profit most of the time," Mr Dimmock said.
It is noticed from the Seniors' Festival website that a number of events are being held in Sydney so this year it seems that small rural communities don't matter. Mr Dimmock has written to Member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead, asking him to pass on the disappointment of the CTC to the Minister for Family and Community Services.
"CTCs look after seniors all through the year and this program has been a major event for us that allowed some reward for our ongoing service to the community," said Mr Dimmock.
"Seniors make up the majority of our client base and the majority of our volunteers also fall into this category."

RSL AGM next Tuesday
Members of the Old Bar Beach RSL sub-branch are reminded that the first meeting for 2017 will be the annual general meeting on Tuesday February 21 at 2pm at Club Old Bar.
This is, of course, a most important meeting as election of office bearers for the coming year will take place. Make it a point to be there.
