Its golden anniversary will be celebrated in conjunction with the club’s annual changeover dinner at Club Taree on Saturday, May 20.
It is envisaged that 100 past and present members of Taree North Club, their wives and many visiting Rotarians will gather to celebrate this special occasion.
On Saturday, June 3, 1967 the District Governor of Rotary District 267 (now 9650) Ray Clinch of Kempsey presented the charter to the newly-formed Rotary Club of Taree North at a dinner held in the Macquarie Barracks and attended by more than 300 guests.
The formation of the club was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Taree and membership on the charter night totaled 22. The first president was Taree North motelier Larry Fatherley.
Other charter members included Roy Warren, Clive Woolcott, Alf Cannings, Fred Atkins, Arthur Somerville, Gordon Weekes, John White, Eddie Bourke, Gordon Cleaver, Bill Collins, Norm Eade, Les Gardner, John Goodfellow, Peter Hartman, Ray Lambert, Daryl Lee, Tom Mobbs, Ron Owen, Bob Weekes and George Wright.
Total membership of Taree North this year is 26, while 147 Rotarians have been members of the club since charter night.
The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideals of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster the following:
- The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
- High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
- The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
- The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
