At the annual meeting Peter congratulated Garry for his long service to the club, and for his inspiring work in leading the members in the art of growing bonsai trees.
Under Garry's guidance the club members have enjoyed many memorable workshops and outings to study the art of bonsai. The purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation (for the viewer) and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity (for the grower).
A bonsai is created beginning with a cutting, seedling or small tree of a species suitable for bonsai development, such as woody-stemmed trees or shrub species that produce true branches and can be cultivated to remain small through pot confinement with crown and root pruning.
The specimen is shaped to be relatively small and to meet the aesthetic standards of bonsai, and when it reaches its planned final size it is planted in a display pot.
Garry Tyrie and his wife Shirley have an amazing display of bonsai trees at their home and they have amassed knowledge and expertise in the art, which they are only too happy to pass on to other club members.
Club meetings are held twice a month, the first Saturday is a workshop held at members’ homes, and a general meeting is held at Club Taree on the third Sunday of the month, commencing at 1pm. Visitors are always welcome and for more details please contact the new president, Peter Langdown on 6553 1050.
There is currently a public display of bonsai trees to commemorate the Chinese New Year at Club Taree, in the foyer and in the dining room.
