“The news came as a surprise for me that’s for sure,” Mr Bromhead.
“He said this is now the time for him and I think each individual member knows when it’s time for them.”
In a statement to the media, Mr Baird said, “serving as Premier of NSW has been a tremendous honour, but I have made clear from the beginning that I was in politics to make a difference, and then move on.”
Mr Bromhead said it was a great privilege to be in parliament and to work with Mr Baird for the last six years.
“Any way you look at it he’s been a fantastic premier and before that a fantastic treasurer – nothing can take away from that,” Mr Bromhead said.
“I’ve got to thank him for his service and 10 years in public life and I wish him well for the future.”
Mr Bromhead said Mr Baird’s decision would not affect the council amalgamations and the formation of MidCoast Council. Mr Bromhead added there are a number of "outstanding candidates” for the position of NSW premier.
“There are a number of outstanding candidates, who are great leaders and great ministers and they will be able to step in to being the leader of the State,” Mr Bromhead said.
“They will put their own individual stamp on policy and leadership.”
Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams shared similar sentiments on the outgoing premier.
“Mike Baird has been an outstanding premier for the people of NSW and it has been an honour to serve as a local member and a minister under his leadership,” Mrs Williams said.
“I wish Mike, Kerryn and their family all the very best for the future and thank them for their service to the people of New South Wales.”
Next week there will be Liberal-party room meeting and a spill of leadership positions.
Following the meeting, Mr Baird will retire from parliament effective immediately.
In his media statement, Mr Baird added, “my retirement from politics will enable fresh leadership for my community”.
