NEWCASTLE Knights junior development rugby league squads took on the Manly Sea Eagles in a trial at Toronto with several Group Three players standing out.

This was their first hit out for 2017 and the games were played in sweltering heat. It was a credit to the boys that it was play at such a high standard.
In the first match the Knights under 15s squad got off to a flyer running out convincing winners eight tries to two with Group Three Group Three players Drey Mercy, Ryan Long, John Roberts and Harry Wesley all scored tries and producde outstanding games.
Zac Power finished strongly, full of running and Ethan Collings was solid on the flank.
In the Harold Mathews under 16s game Manly proved too strong running out convincing winners after the Knights had lead early. Locals Max Buderus and Baylee Walker featured and had strong games. Max is the nephew of Newcastle Knights great and Taree rugby league product Danny Buderus.
In the SG Ball under 18s match the Knights ran out big winners over the Sea Eagles, scoring 10 tries to two.
Taree’s Callum Wesley had an outstanding game at centre and scoring a good try and involving himself in several others. Lachlan Pope had a solid game carting the ball up strongly, while William Baker, a former Group Three representative, also played strongly at fullback and was always dangerous in attack for the Knights.
The Knights coaching staff were well pleased with the efforts and the boys are looking forward to next weekend’s trial against Canberra at Hinchinbrook.
Bulls start training
TAREE City players returned to training this week in preparation for the Group Three Rugby League season.
The Bulls had a run on Tuesday afternoon and will train on Thursday at the Jack Neal Oval.
Gary Bridge again has charge of the first grade side. Bridge took the Bulls to the minor semi-final last season.
Scott Jacklin will coach Taree’s reserve grade with Matt Mullen taking over the under 18s, where the Bulls are the defending premiers after last season’s win over Macleay Mustangs in the decider.
Troy Betts will coach the women’s league tag. Taree were beaten grand finalists in tag in 2016 after winning the premiership in 2015.
The Group Three competition is expected to start in April with a two week pre-season.
The competition-proper will kickoff after Easter on Saturday April 29.
Eight clubs will again be involved, with Port City the defending premiers in first grade.
