In a dramatic fallout from Sunday night's shock loss, Mitchell Starc is being rested from the third one-day international in Perth, Chris Lynn will travel to Brisbane to see a specialist after aggravating a neck injury and Peter Handscomb was called into the one-day squad.

A replacement for Marsh will be named on Monday, with Test discard Hilton Cartwright and Victoria's Marcus Stoinis both in contention.

Leg-spinner Adam Zampa has been released from the squad to enable him to play for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash but will rejoin the side in Perth on Wednesday.

Marsh has been given time off in the hope it will have him back bowling at top pace for the series against India which starts on February 23. He has been dogged by a shoulder injury this summer and missed a Shield game in mid November.

"Mitchell has had an ongoing shoulder injury which we have been managing but it is now at a point where he is unable to function at the level required. He now requires a period of rest and rehabilitation in order to return to full fitness," said team physiotherapist David Beakley.

The West Australian's ability to bowl above 140 km/h was one of the main reasons behind his recall to the Test squad on Sunday but it could be shortlived if he cannot shake off the problem. Marsh was reduced to the high 120s for pace on Sunday night comfortably played by Pakistan in the closing overs.

"We're giving him time off to get that right because he could be a very key player for us in India," captain Steve Smith said.

"He hasn't been able to bowl the speeds he would like. We know how important air speed is in India, particularly with the ball reversing. We need him to get that right."

Starc is being given time off after a taxing summer where he did not miss a Test for the first time in his career. He will return for the fourth game of the series in Sydney on Sunday.

"Mitchell (Starc) has had a very big six months and played a significant amount of cricket. We needed to find an opportunity to give him a break and with his schedule in the comings months we believe now is the appropriate time to give him a match off," said chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns

Lynn's participation in this series is in doubt after missing Sunday's game due to a neck problem. The injury-prone batsman has been battling the complaint this summer though it has not stopped him from being the star player in the BBL.

Handscomb has been given the chance to become a multi-format player and is poised to make his one-day international debut on Thursday.

The changes will give Pakistan more hope of pulling off a major upset this series after the world No.8 stunned Australia by six wickets in Melbourne. The five-match series is now squared after two games.

Australia started poorly with the bat and were dismissed for 220, well short of the 250 that Pakistan thought would be a par score on the two-paced wicket.

Australia's batsmen have now turned in two modest efforts after a dominant Test series.

"I think we've been in a rush - a few players coming in from the BBL, there's no excuse fo the Test players," Smith said.

"We need to rein it in a bit, give ourselves a chance and build partnerships so we have the power in the sheds to go hard at the back end.

"We know we have plenty of power but most have been in the shed by the time we need to go."
