Contractors were at work in Taree Park, near the 2BOB Community Radio studio, this morning removing cones from the bunya pines.

This happens annually, scheduled by MidCoast Council.

Bunya pines are a native of Queensland but Wikipedia reports that many old planted specimens can be found in New South Wales and in Perth, Western Australia.

Their heavy cones can measure 20-35 centimetres in diameter. The cones are removed for safety reasons.
