Ryan Condon and Karim Kaufman, both youth workers from the Byron Shire, decided the best way to wind down from a busy year would be to dress in Santa suits and ride motorbikes to Sydney and back.
“We felt like we really needed an adventure so decided to do a raod trip,” Mr Kaufman said. “It was getting cold so we went to Kmart to buy warm clothes and came out with Santa suits. We did it for a laugh.”
Mr Kaufman said he was amazed by how much joy the sight of two travelling Santas bought to the people they passed.
“The highlight has been all the smiles we’ve got,” he said. “We’ve been next to truck drivers, who look as mean as anything, and they’ve just lost it giggling at us.
“We came to some road works and heard a roadworker say into his phone, ‘we’ve got two Santas coming through’. It’s just been great to give people a bit of a laugh.”
Mr Condon said he loved the reaction the duo got from children.
“Kids get so excited – I’m not sure they knew we weren’t real Santas,” he said. “We bought a few presents for the kids and handed them out along they way. It’s been so much fun.”
The pair are planning to do another Santa road trip next Christmas to raise money for charity.
“We’ve just been blown away by how much people loved it – especially in Sydney,” Mr Condon said. “An old lady even asked to have her photo taken with us.”
“It’s definitely been an adventure and we’re talking about how we can use it to benefit a charity next time.”
