But it was not quite enough to match the Melbourne Stars, who finished 8/147 to the home team's 4/141.
Stars opening duo Meg Lanning and Emma Inglis were on fire early. The game was delayed when Inglis hit a six high over a grandstand roof.
But once they went out – Inglis for 46 off 26 balls, Lanning for 33 off 28 – Thunder bowlers Nicola Carey and Erin Osborne quickly began to work their way through the order.
Then Hayley Jensen rallied with 30, so while the other Melbourne batters fell away the Stars finished on a very respectable 8/147.
The Thunder's openers Stefanie Taylor and Rachael Haynes took a steady approach, notching up a 63 run partnership until Emma Triscani got Haynes out lbw in the eighth over.
After batting fifth, the Indian Kaur finished with 47 runs from 28 balls.
