This is the second year the schools’ support units have clashed for the shield.
“The schools been playing basketball here for the past four years,’’ Tim Williams from Taree High explained.
He organised the challenge with his Chatham High counterpart Peter Wilson.
“We play separately during the week, but last year we decided to start the challenge,’’ Mr Wilson explained.
He assured the players take the challenge seriously, with school pride on the line.
The A Teams took to the court first where Taree took honours, while a second game between Chatham’s B Team and a Taree High combination followed.
Mr Williams said the teams are made up of players with intellectual and physical disabilities. He said basketball is a great release.
“The kids look forward to it every week. You can see them build in confidence as the year progresses.’’
Mr Williams added the improvement in their skill level is also evident.
“At the start some of them are lucky to be able to get the ball in the air. Now they're shooting baskets.’’
The schools will be back on court for the third challenge in 2017 with Chatham determined to keep the shield while Taree’s desperate to break through for their first win.
