The group is excited to perform at one of Taree’s biggest community events of the year, Carols in the Park.
Held at Fotheringham Park, the Christmas concert will this year have an Australian theme to recognise our country’s farmers.
With this in mind, the Taree West choir, which consists of students from years four, five and six; will sing Aussie Jingle Bells as well as the well-known bush ballad Waltzing Matilda.
The performance comes off the choir’s appearance at the Sinfonia concert Pirates’n’Percussion in November where they sang Dry Your Tears, Afrika in the language of Côte and Ivoire (Ivory Coast) called Mende.
They also came first in their section at the Taree and District Eisteddfod this year.
The choir is an extracurricular activity for the students who come together to practice with teacher Sarah Ney at lunchtime once a week.
Musician Tanya Brown also volunteers her time to help with the choir.
“She’s fantastic. I couldn’t do it without her,” said Sarah.
The students have been preparing for Carols in the Park this term and have also been part of two full production rehearsals with other performers.
Carols in the Park is organised by a small Taree Carols committee in conjunction with the Taree Combined Ministers Association.
This year’s carols, which showcases the huge amount of talent we have here in the Manning Valley, kicks off at 6.30pm with food available from about 5pm.
The night, designed to bring the community together in the Christmas spirit, will conclude with a fireworks display at 9pm.
