The demolition began on November 14 and is expected to end mid-December, says Tracey Tattersall, manager of systems and assets for DSS.
About 15 people living with disability called the hostel their home but they have moved into five new contemporary style homes in the communities of Taree, Old Bar and Wingham.
Ms Tattersall says DSS will consult the community in the new year as part of the process to redevelop the site “to see how we can best utilise the site for the community and what type of accommodation could be built on the site – homes, units or a mix of both.”
DSS chief executive officer Shelley Sabey says the “hostel building represents the past.”
“It served a purpose but there is no sadness for former residents about no longer living there. It’s been a positive change and given them greater opportunities to live their lives their way.”
