Tony Hinton from Taree Old Bar, Gloucester’s Kevin Everett and Port Macquarie’s Pat Cudmore were chosen by a Group Three-appointed panel this week. There were seven nominations.
They join Kevin Hardy (Taree United), Warren Kimberley (Wauchope), Wally Snedden (Taree Old Bar/Wauchope) and Tony Paskins (Forster-Tuncurry) (inducted 2013), Errol Ruprecht (Taree United/Old Bar), Garry McQuillan (Forster-Tuncurry) (2014), Harry Smith (Wingham) and Bruce Slater (Wingham) (2015) in the hall of fame.
Everett, a five-eighth or centre, was one of the stars of powerful Gloucester teams that dominated the then Group 18 competition in the 1950s and 60s. A five-eight or centre Everett made his first grade debut in 1956 and retired in 1967. He won eight premierships in Group 18 and Group Three (formed in 1966) with the Magpies and was a North Coast representative in the era when the division stretched from Gloucester to Tweed Heads.
A halfback, Hinton shot to prominence when he scored three tries and was named player of the match in Taree Old Bar’s 24-20 win over Taree United in the 1978 grand final in his first season out of under 18s. This was Old Bar’s first premiership in 32 years. He was also a member of premier teams in 1979/80/81 and 82 and captain-coached the Lifesavers to the 1987/88 premiership triumphs.
He represented NSW Country on a tour of New Guinea and also in mid-week cup fixtures while he was a fixture in Group Three and North Coast teams, playing for North Coast in the match against the touring British side in 1984. He was named Group Three player of the year on three occasions.
Cudmore, a lock or five-eighth, was a member of Port Macquarie’s premier side in 1976 – the club’s first in Group Three. He had a stint at North Sydney from 1977-80 before captain-coaching Junee from 1981/83, where he also represented Riverina.
Cudmore returned to Group Three as Port’s captain-coach in 1983 and was a regular Group Three and North Coast representative. He was named the group’s player of the year in 1986 and 87 when he shared the award with Hinton.
Meanwhile Comboyne-born former international Ian Schubert will be the special guest at the Group Three Rugby League Hall of Fame induction.
Schubert was a member of the first Australian Schoolboys team to tour England in 1973. He played first grade with Wauchope the following season before switching to Eastern Suburbs, where, playing fullback, he was the player of the match in East’s 38-0 drubbing of St George in the 1975 grand final. He represented Australia in the World Series that year in England and was also a member of the 1978 and 1982 Kangaroo touring teams to England and France.
Schubert played with Easts, Manly and Western Suburbs and in all played 269 first grade matches.
In more recent years he was the NRL’s salary cap auditor and unearthed the Melbourne Storm’s salary cap rorts in 2010.
