Over the weekend, the alternative route for traffic is via Tinonee Road and for heavy vehicles is via Gloucester Road.
"ARTC will place message boarding on Wingham and Tinonee Roads throughout October to advise of the closure and also on the Pacific Highway and Manning River Drive, Taree from 24 October so regular road users and visitors will be well aware in advance of the closure" said the ARTC spokesperson, Mr William Black.
Wingham Road will be closed from the Youngs Road intersection through to the level crossing over the weekend, with resident and business access permitted only.
"ARTC are working to notify as many groups as possible of the closure, including emergency and allied health services, the Wingham business community, residents and those that might be visiting Wingham over the October 29-30 weekend" said William Black
ARTC said the level crossing needs emergency repairs to ensure public safety and unfortunately it is not possible to provide one way access or side tracks to allow traffic through while the repairs take place.
ARTC appreciates the significant inconvenience the closure causes to Wingham businesses and residents while this necessary closure takes place.
"We thank the community for their cooperation while ARTC rebuilds a safe level crossing for Wingham Road" said Mr Black.
The diversion via Tinonee will mean extra traffic on the Bucketts Way which has seen delays for drivers for a number of months as road repairs have taken place.
"At this stage, MidCoast Council is on schedule to have the Bucketts Way roadworks complete before this weekend, to help with the extra traffic expected on the Bucketts Way" said MidCoast Council’s Director Engineering, Ron Hartley.
