The State government has ruled out a hike in local government rates to fund the new Joint Organisation (JO) that will include MidCoast Council.

“While the rating process takes into account all kinds of changes in the sector each year, there will not be a specific or separate adjustment process to fund Joint Organisations. The proposed JO model has been carefully developed to minimise unnecessary costs.” (See below for related story links.)
It will make a one-off payment of $300,000 to set-up the JO and its ongoing running costs, including the employment of an executive officer and staff could be made up of contributions from member councils and income generated from grants.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council expressed concern about funding the JO in its submission to the State government.
“At a time when most regional and rural councils cannot meet their infrastructure backlog needs, is it wise to spend more ratepayer money on another layer of bureaucracy?”
