The left-hander was dropped for the third and final Test of Australia's forgettable Sri Lanka campaign and if selectors follow through with the horses for courses policy for the India series that has been foreshadowed by team performance chief Pat Howard he could end up being left out even if he stars again at home against South Africa and Pakistan in the coming months.

One of the selectors, head coach Darren Lehmann, has indicated that the success last summer of Khawaja and Joe Burns, who was also dropped in Sri Lanka, would be difficult to ignore when picking an XI for the first Test against the Proteas in Perth in November despite both struggling in foreign conditions. If that is the case, however, how they find a place for Shaun Marsh, who has two centuries in his past two Tests, will be intriguing.

Khawaja, 29, nailed down the No.3 spot in the batting order emphatically last season with a stunning sequence of four hundreds in five matches. With a busy schedule ahead there is very little time for the Australians to investigate in much depth how they might better cope on the subcontinent in February and March and Khawaja's attention is very much on the here and now.

"I will look at that but ... I want to concentrate on this summer in Australia ahead," he said on Wednesday.

"There is no point looking at India if I don't score any runs in the summer here and if we don't win games against the current opposition we've got coming. If that bridge comes or when it comes I'll look at it.

"I've already sort of assessed Sri Lanka, I'm sure all of us have. We have as a group. But us moving forward we need to win at home first. We're playing against two quality attacks. They're very good teams so first and foremost we need to do well there and once we can tick those boxes off we can start looking at India again. I'm sure everyone will have a think about it over the summer."

Khawaja was speaking as the latest recipients of the Basil Sellers Scholarship Program were named at the SCG. A decade ago he and Phillip Hughes were the first two inductees of the program, which provides financial support for handpicked young cricketers in NSW.

The Queensland captain had a post-series debrief with Lehmann and selectors and the indication is that he has been told he is very much in their plans for the summer.

"I don't particularly want to chat about it because it was between myself and the selectors and the coach. I'm sure if they want to say something, they can," he said.

"[Being dropped] didn't seem like it was the end of the world. I can understand where they were coming from, even though it was disappointing and I didn't fully agree with it.

"At the end of the day it's out of your hands. You've just got to roll with the punches and hopefully when you get another chance you score runs."
