Hundreds of families filled the school’s hall for the launch of the Art Show on Thursday night (September 8) and waited in line for the chance to buy the artworks produced by the young students.
Money raised from the sales will go into the school’s performing arts budget.
Children’s author and illustrator Stephen Michael King conducted the official opening and said that as someone who has worked as an artist for 30 years and who had lived a “big creative life” he felt it was important come (on what was his birthday) to say a few words about what he loves about creativity.
“I’m basically a kid who never grew up. I draw pictures every day. Creativity is everywhere and art is a beautiful place you can go where there are no rights or wrongs.”
Stephen also read a quote by psychologist Carl Jung that sits on his drawing desk, which includes the statement that “without play no serious creative work has ever come into being”.
Stephen said he wished for the students that they continue to make lots of mess and that he would be conducting two days of workshops at the school later in the year.
“I’ll be teaching them how to make mess and I hope they do it till they are 100.”
The exhibition continued on Friday, September 9.
