“Dad was my inspiration and I wanted to do something for his upcoming fifth anniversary and that’s when I decided to shave off my hair and organise a raffle to raise funds for Cancer Council NSW.”
“My fervent hope is that one day there will be a cure for cancer and someone somewhere down the track doesn’t need to go through the pain, upset, hurt and grief that myself, my mum and brothers have with dad being diagnosed and losing his battle in such a short time frame.”
Monique explains, “Dad was already at stage four when he was diagnosed with aggressive metatastic lung cancer with bony metastases at the end of July, 2011 (just days before his granddaughter’s first birthday). He passed away two months later on September 30.
“My head shave will be conducted on the evening of Friday, September 30 at 6.30pm on the back verandah of the family home, as this is where one of my best mates regularly cut my dad’s hair. It is also where we whiled away many memorable hours having cups of tea, doing ‘find words’ and chatting. A piece of my heart went the day he passed. He will always hold a special place in my heart and memories.”
Many generous local businesses and community members have kindly donated goods and services for a raffle valued at around $2000 which will be drawn at the time of the head shave.
Should you wish to purchase a raffle ticket to help Monique reach her goal of $2,000 you can purchase tickets at TSG Wingham, Isabella Street; Australia Hotel, Wingham; Farmers Hardware and Noelene Darby Hairdresser or contact Monique on 6553 0745 or make a donation through her online fundraising page
Just like Monique everyone can do something every day to help beat cancer; donate, fundraise, volunteer or campaign with Cancer Council NSW.
“Cancer Council’s vision “Together we will beat cancer” is slowly being achieved; we’re reducing deaths from cancer, and preventing cancer in the NSW community by improving treatments and encouraging people to lead healthy, cancer-smart lifestyles, stated Sarah Rogers, Cancer Council NSW, Lower Mid North Coast community relations coordinator.
