New documents published by the Department of Finance show that Australia’s federal politicians claimed more than $55m between July 1 and December 31 last year.

The biggest spending politician was foreign minister Julie Bishop, with more than half of her claimed total of $808,649.49 arising from overseas travel accumulated in her ministerial role.
On the Mid North Coast, Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie claimed $208,443.95, while Cowper’s Luke Hartsuyker notched $380,389.62 in expenses.
Both MPs biggest expenditures went towards their offices, with Dr Gillespie’s spending $85,350.01 on office administrative costs, while Mr Hartsuyker spent big on office facilities, claiming $167,422.52.
For reference, deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek headed the office facilities category with more than $244,087 claimed.
Liberal MP David Coleman topped the office administration costs list with $172,737.99.
According to the Department of Finance, the office budgets include such things as stationery, printing, publications, software, and Australian flags.
Mr Hartsuyker also claimed $26,802.14 in international travel costs, stemming from a 2015 trip to Turkey for a G20 meeting of labour and employment Ministers, on behalf of the Minister for Employment.
Dr Gillespie made no claims in the categories of overseas travel, charter, or office fit outs in the second half of 2015.
In the other categories measured, both MPs are relatively similar.
Cowper’s MP claimed $21,654 in travel allowances, compared to his Lyne counterpart’s claim of $14,720.
Domestic travel saw Mr Hartsuyker claim $32,048.62 in domestic schedules fares and $13,060.75 in car costs.
Dr Gillespie had $13,287.91 in domestic scheduled fares, with $20,317.21 in vehicle costs.
