The award recognises year six students who follow in Fred Hollows’ footsteps by showing care and compassion for others.

Founding director of The Fred Hollows Foundation Gabi Hollows said: “Fred used to say that the basic attribute of mankind was our ability to look after each other. The Fred Hollows Humanity Award recognises students in NSW who have reflected this value in their own lives.”

Bridie was nominated by her teacher Jason Taylor.

Mr Taylor said Bridie, who is school captain, represents the school admirably and enthusiastically at all school events outside of school hours.

She has performed in the school choir at four events so far this year including NAIDOC Day and Anzac Day ceremonies, and took part in Harrington's Anzac Day March during the school holidays.

“Bridie proudly marched at the front of the students who attended adorning her bright school uniform,” Mr Taylor said.

“Bridie always contributes to fundraising initiatives, such as raising money for school camps and organisations like the Cancer Council, and she participates in school sporting events, such as cross country and hockey matches.

“Bridie has two younger sisters and, I believe, makes a wonderful role model for her family, the school and wider community.”

All Humanity Award nominees will be recognised at a presentation ceremony at NSW Parliament House on Monday, September 5 where The Fred Hollows Foundation Junior Ambassador for New South Wales will also be announced.

This ambassador will be able to extend their humanity by allocating $5000 donated by Specsavers to one of The Fred Hollows Foundation’s programs to end avoidable blindness.
