Two Commodores, one white and one silver, collided head on just west of the Beekeepers Inn at Vittoria at around 12.45pm.
The white Commodore had been travelling east towards Bathurst and the silver Commodore travelling west.
Inspector David Abercrombie, duty officer with Chifley Local Area Command, said a triple-0 call came through to emergency services saying there had been a head-on collision 24km west of Bathurst.
Emergency personnel rushed to the crash but nothing could be done to help the female passenger of the silver Commodore, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The male driver of the silver Commodore, along with the male driver of the white Commodore and his female passenger, were all transported to Orange Health Service by road ambulance.
Police immediately established a crime scene, cordoning off the road while crash investigation officers from both the Western Region and Metropolitan commands made their way to the area.
“Police and other emergency services all responded to the call just after 12.45pm,” Inspector Abercrombie said.
“Unfortunately a female passenger in one of the cars was killed in the crash.
“The drivers of each vehicle, both men, were transported to Orange Base Hospital for treatment, as was another female passenger,” he said.
Inspector Abercrombie said it was too early to tell what caused the fatal accident, with specialist crash investigators arriving on scene just after 2.20pm.
With the Mitchell Highway closed traffic was diverted through Blayney.
Inspector Abercrombie said on Sunday afternoon he expected the highway would be closed late into the evening.
Inspector Abercrombie said the terrible tragedy was a timely reminder to the region’s motorists to take care on our roads.
Police will now prepare a report for the coroner.
