MidCoast Council has also undertaken extensive weed control in these areas.
MidCoast Council’s landscaper (Taree depot), Rob Cowley, is a man of many talents and builds all sorts of things around our region, including the two stairways, a new fence and a larger viewing platform at Old Bar Beach.
“These particular beach access points are now so much safer for locals and tourists and something that the community has been asking for, so we’re glad we could deliver,” said Rob.
In conjunction with construction of the fence and stairs, MidCoast Council’s environmental team has also done extensive weed control along the same stretch of beach, targeting noxious weeds including bitou bush, lantana, mother of millions and asparagus. The team have also planted native trees that are suited to our local coastal conditions to replace the weeds and provide extra foreshore stability.
MidCoast Council’s team leader for Environmental Services (Taree office), Tanya Cross, is happy with the outcome of the project.
“We’ve not only provided user-friendly access points to the beach, but the weed control and regeneration work that the team has done will go a long way towards improving the biodiversity of the beach front,” said Tanya.
“We’ve also had lots of really positive feedback from our community, which has been fantastic,” added Tanya.
This project was made possible by funding through the Environmental Levy.
