Witt is a real contender for the league’s golden boot winner, awarded to the leading goal scorer.
“Jacko has 18 goals and I think he’s about level with a player from Camden Haven,’’ Taree coach Rod Bartley said.
Witt’s tally rose by four last week against Port FC when Taree had a 10-1 romp to charge into equal third place on the ladder with Tuncurry-Forster.
Tomorrow they’ll meet a side desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top five. Macleay sits in fifth place on 22 points with Kempsey Saints on 21. United is at best a mathematical chance on 15 and cannot to lose another game to have any hope of qualifying.
“We can’t afford to lose this. If we do we could drop from third to fifth,’’ Bartley warned
Taree will be without experienced Justin Atkins who is unavailable. His place will go to Callum Bartley, who impressed against FC last week.
Coach Bartley is still concerned about defensive lapses.
“We’ve scored more goals than any team this year,’’ he pointed out.
“But we’re sixth when it comes to goals conceded so that’s an area we still have to work on as we work towards the semi-finals.’’
