The annual competition invites high school bands from around Australia to submit tracks to be reviewed and rated by the public online. The reviews boost the band’s chance of becoming a finalist and getting played on the radio. The competition winner gets a visit to triple j studios where they will record, remix or master their track.
SOAR’s lead singer Banjo Hunt said the band are most interested in the possible airplay of their music.
“Another local band Eleven, Eleven did really well in the charts when they entered – they got airplay too,” said Banjo.
The powers of Unearthed also elevated former Manning Valley band Bouy oh Bouy when they were added to Port Macquarie’s Festival of the Sun music festival in 2014.
Banjo said the best thing about Unearthed is they just don’t support your career at the beginning, “they keep supporting you as you go”.
The band have been particularly inspired by former Unearthed High winners Japanese Wallpaper and Snakadaktal.
Earlier this year SOAR took out the Taree and District Eisteddfod’s Battle of the Bands.
They presented their high school with brand new Beale Electric Piano. On top of the piano, they also won recording with Stuart Lovell at "Rottencrypt Studios" in Cundletown.
SOAR will play Wingham’s Akoostik Festival in October and Forster-Tuncurry’s Lakeside Festival this November.
