With DonateLife Week from July 31 to August 7, we would love your support to increase the number of people on the Australian Organ Donor Register.
Just 32 per cent of Australian adults are currently on the national Register, yet 69% of Australians say they are willing to donate.
That is why during DonateLife Week we are asking Australians ‘What are you waiting for?’.
We’ve launched a new campaign page – www.donatelife.gov.au - to make it easier for Australians to register and share their donation decision online.
One of the greatest motivators for people deciding about organ and tissue donation is reading or hearing about this life-saving subject in the media.
If you’re able to run a story, we can assist you by providing state-specific information as well as putting you in touch with transplant recipients, donor families and/or medical professionals.
3 reasons Australians need to join the Australian Organ Donor Register
Make it official. You can no longer register your donation decision via your driver’s licence. You need to join the Australian Organ Donor Register.
Remove doubt. Registering your decision is important because it leaves your family in no doubt of your decision to save lives a donor.
It saves more lives. In 2015, organ donation proceeded in 91 per cent of cases where the deceased was a registered donor- this drops to just 52 per cent where the potential donor had not registered and the family had no prior knowledge.
Please help end the wait. There are some 1500 Australians and their families today waiting for a life-saving transplant.
About the Register:
The Australian Organ Donor Register is the only national register for organ and tissue donation for transplantation after death. Recording donation decisions is voluntary and you have complete choice over which organs and tissue you wish to donate.
The Register enables authorised medical staff to check a person’s registered decision anywhere in Australia, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They then give that information to your family in the event of your death where donation is possible.
There is no age limit on the donation of some organs and tissue.
