Though we’re well into the wintery weather, now’s a great time to get away from it all and explore our beaches, so pick up a permit, pack a picnic and head for the coast these school holidays. The new beach access permits, and brochures showing vehicle access points, are available at your nearest Visitor Information Centre, council Customer Service Centre, and selected local bait and tackle stores, and must be clearly displayed on the bottom passenger side of your vehicle’s windscreen.
Beaches currently open to 4WD vehicles include Crowdy Head beach at low tide, Kylie’s Beach (north of Crowdy), Crowdy south-side, Tuncurry Beach, Harrington and Old Bar.
Please note that due to severe erosion caused by recent storm events, Manning Point access remains closed until further notice, and limited access is available at the northern end of Tuncurry Beach.
“Our beaches offer a great opportunity for 4WD’ers to get off the beaten track, and so long as people do the right thing by following a few simple rules, we welcome locals and visitors to take advantage of our stunning coastline”, said Dan Aldridge, senior leader property and procurement (Taree office).
Rules include displaying a valid beach access permit, adhering to the maximum speed limit of 40kph (or 15kph when within 100 metres of another vehicle or beach user), driving between the tide marks, and keeping clear of prohibited areas.
If that’s not enough to get you thinking about hitting the beach over winter, our beaches are also furry-friendly. With supervision and adherence to our rules, your four-legged friends are also welcome on and off leash, but don’t forget to take home their poo!
