The exemplary egg-shower has won a raft of awards at the 2016 National Poultry Championship, including being crowned the Australian national egg champion.
Held at Sydney’s Olympic Park from June 10-12, Katie won first, second and third place for her super-eggs, as well as winning awards for the best presented hen and the smartest hen.
It follows on from her success at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, where she has claimed the champion egg plate and first place over the last four years.
The achievements are all the more remarkable when it is remembered that Katie is only nine-years-old.
The Manning Valley Anglican College student, who is currently in year four, acknowledged that she was probably the youngest competitor there.
Her age doesn’t stop older competitors asking for her advice though.
“Sometimes the other competitors ask what my secret is,” Katie said.
But there is no secret Katie said, with a balanced nutritious diet and an abundance of tender love and care the cornerstones of her success.
Katie also had the opportunity to meet and be interviewed by Dr Harry Cooper while at the championships.
While “a little bit nervous” about meeting the famous Dr Harry, Katie said he was “really nice”.
Katie has the benefit of a family background of highly successful breeders and showers.
Katie's uncle Barry Tisdell is a renowned breeder and shower, while another uncle, Garnett Wamsley, has been breeding for more than 45 years. Her father Peter and late grandfather Clem are also noted breeders.
With a long history of competing behind her, Katie’s reason for continuing the tradition is simple.
“It’s just fun,” she said.
