AN allocation of $10.3 million to the second and third stages of the John Hunter Hospital's neonatal unit tops the Hunter Region's list of health spending promises in this year's budget.

All up, the expansion is set to cost $18 million and to be finished in 2018.
Singleton Hospital is also receiving $5.4 million this year of a $7 milion upgrade, also timed to finish in 2018.
These are the only two new major works listed in the Hunter health budget.
The list of Hunter works in progress includes a $7.5 milion allocation to the John Hunter under the "Energy Efficient Government Program" or EEGP title.
John Hunter Children's Hospital paediatric intensive care unit also receives $5.1 million in 2016-17, the final tranche of a $14 million project that began in 2014.
Muswellbrook Hospital's redevelopment stage two receives $2.9 million of a $19.9 million project that began in 2015 and which is due to finish in 2019, with $1 million spent so far.
Maitland's new hospital receives $6.2 million in planning and site preparation funds, money added to the $13.6 million spent already on a $20 million planning stage that began in 2013.
