The team had an unsettled start and officials were still looking for players the day before leaving. They had to rely on other associations giving player’s clearances.. There were only five survivors from 2015 in the squad. Most of the team played in the State under 18 titles the previous month.
‘We had a very emotional start with the girls wearing black armbands and having a minute’s silence for Heidi Hamming, who had represented Manning Valley only two years previously. Heidi had passed away two days before the championships,’’ team manager Narelle Salmon said.
The first game at was against a very fast and skillful Hunter New England Team. They applied pressure early and gained a number of penalty corners . Maggie Sky, in her first opens in goals played exceptionally well which kept Manning in the game. Manning scored first, against the run of play through a goal from Mikaela Coleman. Played flowed from end to end for the rest of the first half before some great lead up work from Emily Luckie saw a penalty stroke awarded to Manning giving Mikaela Coleman a second goal after converting the stroke. Hunter New England hit back though and the scores were locked at 2-2 at halftime. New England finished the stronger in thelast 10 minutes to win 4-2 – Manning’s heaviest defeat in the championship.
The second game saw Manning play Goulburn (1). Goulburn had three teams at the championships so Manning knew they were going to have a battle. The girls played extremely well as a team and got off to a great start leading 3-0 after 10 minutes with goals to Jasmine Moscatt, Mikaela Coleman and Grace Coleman. However this is where a bit more experience in the team may of helped as a much older Goulburn team got back on top and leveled things up with the score being 4-4 all at fulltime, with Brooke Reeve netting Manning’s fourth goal.
Manning then tackled unbeaten Central Coast. The girls played very well and had multiple chances of scoring, however just couldn't find the back of the net. Manning went down 2-1 but were far from disgraced. The girls took on Illawarra/South Coast at a very cool 7pm time slot. Once again a lack of experience probably cost the side in the 2-1 loss with the only goal being scored by Emily Luckie. Had they won this game 4-0, Manning would of finished second in their pool – that's how close the competition table was after all round matches.
Manning then had to play off to stay in division two. They were up to the challenge and scored a convincing 5-1 win over Goulburn (2) with Emily Luckie and Grace Coleman scored two goals and Morgan Coleman one.
