Wingham Rifle Club hosts this event every year on the June long weekend.
The meeting attracted 110 competitors from all over NSW and Victoria.
The event goes for three days with matches being contested over distances of 400-600 yards.
There are six categories with open and telescopic sights.
Thurtell has been in fantastic form of late, winning the Queens prize in Canberra and Brisbane, and also winning the prestigious festival of Sydney. In a nail biting finish on his home range Thurtell trailed narrowly going into the last range.
Jim Bailey from Sydney missed the bullseye on his second last shot to hand over victory to Thurtell, to become the champion for 2016.
Wingham's last winner was Wendy Moon in 2008.
Peter's son Lindon, who is currently in the NSW under 25s team, finished 10th.
