And on Sunday, June 19 she will be shaving it all off. Yes, shaving, not cutting.
It’s a big step for the 16-year-old Wingham High School student, and although her family is not personally affected by cancer, Melinda has organised a cancer fundraiser and her goal is $2000.
To reach this goal, Melinda has challenged family, friends and some TS Manoora Taree Navy staff and cadets, of which she is a member, to join her in going bald.
“All the cadets shaving didn’t hesitate when Melinda asked them and have been very supportive with ideas for the day,” Melinda’s mum Narelle said.
The event takes place at Wingham Citizens Centre on the corner of Primrose and Farquhar Streets from 11.30am to 3.30pm, with the shave starting at 2pm.
Melinda is inviting all and sundry who visit on the day to take part in the shave as well – but you have to be prepared to have a no. 1 shave! Hair cuts and dye jobs don’t cut it for this fundraiser.
Before her head is shaved Melinda will be auctioning off the rights to cut plaits from her hair. She will be looking into options for donating her tresses after the event.
In addition to the shave, there are raffles, a jelly bean guessing competition, entertainment, and food and drink available.
The Wingham Hospital Auxilliary are helping out by cooking baked goods to sell on the day.
If you can’t make it on the day, you can donate to Mel’s fundraiser at http://nsw.cancercouncilfundraising.org.au/mel. Alternatively, you can select other cadets in her team to donate to at http://nsw.cancercouncilfundraising.org.au/tareenavycadets.
