Taree and District Eisteddfod Society president Tim Stack OAM opened the eisteddfod inside Taree's Uniting Church, on Albert Street.

"Life is about practice," said Mr Stack.

"When you get your driver's licence you may feel a little apprehensive.

"But as you practice your confidence builds.

"An eisteddfod is a significant part of practice to these young competitors."

Kelahrni Mobbs of Taree was the first eisteddfod competitor for 2016 in the restricted vocal solo eight years and under.

Mr Stack commented it was "lovely to see a full house" for the first section for 2016.

He said hearing a full applause following their performance was greatly encouraging for the young competitors.

"Anyone who walks on that stage is a winner."

Vocal co-ordinator Deirdre Sutherland said performing at Taree's Uniting Church was a less daunting experience for the junior vocalists, with the church being an "intimate setting."

"It's beautifully staged, and the sound and lights are being done professionally with services donated by Aurora Show FX."

She explained that the church was acoustically perfect for younger voices, who are not assisted by a microphone outside of the pop section.

In addition to sound the venue also comes with its bonuses to audiences, Deirdre said.

"It's a convenient location right in the centre of town, meaning there's plenty of parking too," she said.

"We hope by being so central we will attract a greater audience, especially those on school holidays."

Tickets will be available at the door.

The open age vocal section will be performed back at the Manning Entertainment Centre on Saturday April 23.
