Wingham treasurer Craig Martin spoke with Group Three treasurer Barrie Smith on Thursday night to find out what is required to get a clearance for Idris, a former Australian and State of Origin centre. Idris was released from the final year of his contract with Penrith, saying he wanted to take a break from the game.
Idris was linked with another Group Three club, Port City last year, when his cousin Thomas Dooker was on the Breakers' roster. Idris, originally from Forster-Tuncurry, grew up with Dooker and they remain close. Dooker has since switched to Wingham for this season. Idris has been overseas but has returned to Australia and has spoken to Dooker.
Wingham treasurer Craig Martin said earlier that Idris had indicated he was keen to have a run with the Tigers in one of the club's charity fundraising games. Clubs are permitted guest players - usually retired NRL stars - in these matches.
However, Mr Martin said on Friday that Idris could now be available more frequently.
"Tom (Dooker) asked us what we had to do to get Jamal cleared," Mr Martin explained.
"I had to ring Barrie Smith on another matter, so I made inquires then."
Mr Martin thinks it unlikely Idris will don a Wingham jumper in the immediate future.
"He certainly won't be playing on Sunday," he said.
"There are still a few things we have to work out yet...but I'm 75 per cent sure he'll be playing for us this year."
