Now life-long friends Zoe Cutts and Rebecca Deer will embark on a trip to Spain on November 24 to represent Australia in futsal as part of the Australian Youth women's team.
Zoe, from Wallabi Point and Rebecca from Old Bar, will take part in the international club championships in Spain for 10 days, before continuing the competition in Wrexham, Wales, for seven days.
The 19-year-olds started playing soccer together for the Old Bar Barbarians when they were eight-years-old, however when they reached 14, they decided to try out futsal at Taree's Saxby's Stadium.
Futsal quickly became their sport of choice.
"It's faster," said Zoe, on her reasoning for staying with futsal.
"You aren't stuck in the one position, there are less players and you have more opportunity to shoot," expanded Rebecca.
Despite going in different directions with their university choices following finishing high school at Taree High, the girls get to play together in the Australian Futsal Association national titles in each January in Sydney.
Their selection for the Spain and United Kingdom tour had its genesis at the the national titles last year.
"There are selectors who go around and watch each game and if we get selected we receive an email a couple months later," explained Rebecca.
Both girls cite Manning Futsal president Peter Forbes as greatly encouraging then through out their whole experience with the sport.
"Peter was the one that really got us into futsal and taught us," said Rebecca.
"Cheryl, his wife, is like our futsal mum - always giving us hugs and bottles of water," added Zoe.
Playing for Australia has its obligations.
Zoe and Rebecca will be expected to wear their full Australian uniform on the 30 hour flight to Madrid.
Upon landing they will get straight into training, where it is anticipated they will receive training from Spanish and Australian coaches to help improve their skills, game play, team work and futsal knowledge.
Zoe and Rebecca expect to find out today the other countries or club teams they'll be playing against in the championship.
Both are looking forward to the experience of playing against international opposition.
According to the Australia Futsal Association outside of very competitive games and extensive training the tour offers, tour members get to experience events such as attending professional Futsal and football matches.
The tour also boasts plenty of sightseeing and valuable cultural experiences.
Rebecca and Zoe are looking forward to the "culture, the food and the siestas" in Spain, on top of getting to play the sport they love.
Zoe is currently studying psychology at the University of Newcastle and Rebecca is studying social work at the University of New England in Armidale.
Both girls are determined to pursue futsal as far as they can go with the sport.
