Fourteen volunteers laboured to cut away and knock down brick work at the Endeavour Place toilet block in Taree.

The work was dirty, dusty and noisy and the team laboured with sledgehammers and concrete saws to do the structural transformation required for the makeover.

Hands lifted more than 13 tonnes of old brick that had been knocked to the ground into a truck for removal. According to Tidy Up Taree organiser, Graham Brown OAM "they worked like powerhorses".

"Blokes worked on sledgehammers for two-and-a-half hours non-stop. They were like machines," Graham said.

"Garden beds were planted out and prep spraying was done on brickwork. Everyone worked so hard."

The honour roll members included Greater Taree City Council mayor Paul Hogan, Sue Calvin, Jade Calvin, Marcia Fowler, Meredith Kirton, Terry Kitching, Neil Mackenzie, John McCallum, Gill McDonald, Peter McDonald, Col Robb, Kyle Brown, Ruth Brown, Warren Steedman, Phillip Thorton and Toby Uglow.

The Endeavour Place toilet block transformation will continue this weekend, and as always, Graham is calling for volunteers.

"We will have to drop another wall to create the accessible toilet," Graham said.

"The new roof is also set to go up and hopefully the weather will let us bag the brickwork."

The makeover of the Endeavour Place toilet block is a Tidy Up Taree initiative that secured funding support from Greater Taree City Council.

Volunteer labour plus $45,000 from council will see the toilet block transformed from an old building to a unisex facility that will "be open, open, open, to let lots of light in and to remove the opportunity for anti-social behaviour," explained Graham.

The project should be completed by the end of November.

Interested volunteers should turn up at the site anytime before 8am on Saturday, November 14.
