This year marks the 20th National Recycling Week which was founded by Planet Ark in 1996 to raise awareness of the environmental benefits of recycling and encourage Australians to change their waste disposal habits.
Australia Post is making it easier for Taree residents to recycle a number of products, including unwanted household items, empty toner cartridges and unwanted mobile phones and accessories.
Australia Post area manager David Ife said National Recycling Week was a good time to remind local residents about the benefits of recycling and just how easy it is to turn unwanted household and workplace items into new materials.
"We're encouraging residents to think twice about binning their empty toner cartridges and leaving their old mobile phones and accessories in drawers at home gathering dust.
"By dropping them off at your local Post Office you're not only reducing the impact on our environment, but creating new materials such as park benches, fencing and batteries."
Layne Beachley, Planet Ark Ambassador and seven-times World Champion surfer said "Planet Ark's National Recycling Week is the perfect opportunity to check your recycling habits and reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill."
"Luckily there are plenty of great programs like 'Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' and MobileMuster available at Australia Post to make it easy!" she continued.
Here are some fast recycling facts:
o Approximately 29 million toner cartridges have been collected in Australia by Planet Ark to date
o 3,330 kg of toner cartridges are diverted from landfill every day
o Approximately 22.5 million unwanted mobile phones are gathering dust in Australian households
o 90 per cent of materials used to make mobile phones can be recycled into things like stainless steel, plastic posts and batteries
Australia Post partners with Cartridges 4 Planet Ark and MobileMuster who recycle and upcycle toner cartridges, mobile phones and accessories to help divert waste from landfill, save energy, conserve our natural resources and protect our environment.
Australia Post also partners with global recyclers TerraCycle, and have produced Australia's first Zero Waste Box for customers to recycle items that can't be recycled in curb-side collections.
