Both are Gooree owned, where Cummings' wife Monica is the racing manager, and they are out the same Thunder Gulch mare Makarova. The stable thinks they have big futures.

"She is lovely broodmare that has thrown a couple of really nice types and is part of a harem of good mares at Gooree," Cummings said. "It could be a big day for her but they both faces big tasks on our biggest day of the spring.

"They have both shown us enough to think they are up to the task."

It could be ground-breaking day for the family as Ocean Tempest becomes the Cummings stable's first group 1 runner since the death of legendary trainer Bart Cummings, James' grandfather.

Cummings wrestled with the idea whether Ocean Tempest was ready to step up to group 1 level in the Flight Stakes. He eventually decided to scratch from the Dulcify Stakes, where she also accepted after her fast-closing third in the Reginald Allen Quality last week.

"We thought the benefits of running in the fillies grand final outweighed taking on the colts and geldings in the Dulcify for less prizemoney at the same journey," Cummings said.

"We have filly that we think is going to get better over ground but the mile might be her best trip and it is in her own backyard.

"She was strong at the end last week and I'm confident she will run a big race, but whatever happens she will be spelling on Monday."

Gooree also have the Flight favourite in the Gai Waterhouse-trained Speak Fondly, which is more in the mould of a sprinter-miler.

Ocean Tempest is by sprinting stallion in Bel Esprit when compared to older half brother Ruling Dynasty, which  is a product of Medaglia D'Oro and  has shown more staying tendencies. He steps up to weight-for-age level after overcoming a checkered passage to win in benchmark company at Randwick two weeks ago.

Cummings has made Ruling Dynasty a project after he showed early potential. He got him through to the Australian Derby in the autumn, where he was sixth to Mongolian Khan, after problems in the final 10 days leading into the blue ribbon.

"He got a stone bruise on the Thursday a week before the Derby, and who knows what might have happened if he didn't have that problem," Cummings said. "In 99 out of 100 cases it wouldn't happen but it did with him.

"We have looked after him and he is a very nice stayer on the way up still."

Cummings has plans to run Ruling Dynasty in the City Tatt's Cup in two weeks and the 2000 metres of the Craven Plate fits into that preparation.

"He is up against the weight-for-age horses, which he would be getting up to 10 kilograms from in a handicap, but it works in with his preparation," Cummings said. "We have always had a good opinion of him. This is his toughest test and we will get a good guide on where he is compared to some proven horses on Saturday."
