"The opportunity to sit back and watch the team is great motivation for him," he said.

"By watching his teammates play some of the biggest matches for Australian tennis in recent years, it'll inspire him to come back with a proper mindset."

Kyrgios, Australia's second-highest ranked men's player, was not selected for Australia's Davis Cup team after talks with team captain Wally Masur.

The decision came after a series of run-ins, including arguments with officials at Wimbledon and the infamous sledge directed at Stan Wawrinka at the Montreal Masters.

"Given Nick's recent form and where he has been [mentally] of late, a mutual decision was made," Woodbridge said.

"This will give him the opportunity to rest and freshen up. There isn't a great loss in quality from the Davis Cup squad with Nick sitting out."

Woodbridge's professional tennis career spanned 17 years, and the 11-time doubles grand slam winner believes Kyrgios needs to take a similar long-term view to his career.

"He's got the time and opportunities in front of him to become a great tennis player for Australia," Woodbridge said. What he just needs to do now is put his head down and his nose to the grindstone, work hard on his game.

"His career is going to be a long one. At this stage he just needs to take things slowly and continue his progress."

Australia have reached the semi-final stage for the first time since 2006 after beating Kazakhstan in the quarter-finals.

"It's going to be a very tight set of matches," Woodbridge said.

"Obviously Andy Murray is going to be the key man for them, and he will no doubt win his two singles matches, but we should win the number two singles matches.

"In reality it will most likely be decided by the doubles. If we do win it, Australian tennis will get a huge boost just at the right time heading into the summer."

Part of Tennis Australia's attempts to boost participation at the grassroots level is the Free Tennis Days campaign, which allows people of all ages to pick up a racquet and try the sport.

"With footy season just wrapping up, these events are perfect for getting people back outdoors and enjoying tennis," Woodbridge said.

"Not only does it allow kids to try the sport for the first time, but it can serve as a way for adults who gave up the game when they were younger to come back into tennis."

Weston Creek Tennis Club will be hosting a free tennis day on Saturday as part of its Tennis Carnivale 2015.

The event runs from 1pm to 4pm, and will be preceded by a 24-hour cardio tennis challenge to raise funds for the Tristan Knowles Cancer Foundation.
