Henry Wood, 17, took out the junior welterweight C-class championship in the bout held at Bago. This was just his third fight and his record now stands at two wins and a loss - the defeat coming in his second bout.
Wood won on points in the three round contest, but always thought he had the fight in control.
He started boxing earlier this year on the recommendation of a mate. Wood now trains five nights a week under the guidance of Peter Lewis at the Taree PCYC.
Ryan Spencer, at 24, is a late starter to boxing.
"I was bullied pretty badly at high school,'' he explained.
"I started boxing to get a bit of peace of mind so something like that wouldn't happen again.''
Spencer has had three fights and has stopped his opponents on each occasion inside the three rounds.
Spencer is also a welterweight. He's hoping to get a solid career as an amateur.
"I want to get a good foundation and hopefully win more titles,'' he said.
He said he then 'explore the possibility' of turning professional. Spencer is coached by Kristen Bell.
The boxing troupe at the PCYC is growing steadily. From the start of the next school term the PCYC will offer a new rate of $10 for three nights of training - Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Fourteen is the minimum age to start boxing in NSW.
