The bridge will be closed while some of the truss work is undertaken for safety reasons.
Work will be carried out on Sunday nights to minimise traffic impacts on motorists and the local community, a spokesperson for Roads and Maritime Services said.
The bridge will be closed to traffic tonight and on August 30 between 8pm and 5am, weather permitting and a detour will be in place via the Pacific Highway and Cundletown.
The bridge will remain open to traffic while work on the remaining steel trusses is carried out at night between Sundays and Thursdays from 7pm and 5am with a single lane operating under contra flow and a 40kph speed limit during work hours.
Minor delays may be expected until this stage of work is expected to be completed by the end of August.
With a new traffic safety barrier spanning the length of the bridge now installed, the next stage of work will include repairing and replacing damaged steel beams.
