He is just the second member in the club's 132 year history to win a Queens medal following Tony Moon's success at the Canberra Queens in 2009.
Thurtell was in superb form over a three day competition. He managed to hold off the number two shooter in the world, James Corbett, to win by three centre bulls.
Thurtell went into the final 1000 yard range trailing Corbett by two points, and in an excellent display of marksmanship he was able to overcome his rival to take out the prize. To illustrate what a top performance it was he fired 500 rounds over various distances and his final score was 498/500, only dropping two points over the competition.
The grand champion competition is over five days and Thurtell took this out to win the title of grand champion of the Queensland Queens.
Rob Bartlett of Wingham competed in F Class B and won a fifth place badge in a fine effort.
Meanwhile home on the range competition was from the 800 yards with good sighting of targets. This resulted in some high scores, the standout was once again junior Todd Barnard who shot a perfect second round and in doing so broke the club junior record and F Class B record.
A-graders, club captain Jim Blackmore and secretary Tony Moon both fired great scores only dropping one shot each.
B-graders Chris Barnard and Nick Kenny both had super second rounds.
Top shooting in F Class A belonged to Phil Costa, who is in a purple patch at the moment with him firing two excellent rounds.
A-grade was won by Tony Moon, his 99.10 narrowly defeating Jim Blackmore on 99.7.
B-grade was won by Brian Mavin with 94.7, Nick Kenny followed with 92.5, Chris Barnard 87.5, and Frank Alcott 79.2.
F Class A was taken out by Phil Costa with a total of 116.9, followed by Tony Galati 113.6 and Mike Rogerson, who had a disastrous first round but came back with a strong second round for 102.4.
F Class B was won by Todd Barnard with his record breaking score of 117.7 while Ronan Moon finished with a score of 108.4.
Nick Kenny won the handicap trophy.
Next week shooting is from 800 metres.
