"This is a significant achievement for the school and this area,'' chair of the organising committee, former student Ted McKellar said.
The committee, consisting of Mr McKellar, his wife Claire, Jenny Towers, Bev Warren, Tony Reed, Geoff Leonard, Diane Evenden, Neill Evenden, Nita Pont, Cynthia Coombe, Carolyn Turley and Ann Maree Dobbs, has been working on the anniversary for around 18 months.
Mr McKellar said the celebration was open to all current and former students from the school's 50 year history.
He said James Cross, a former school captain, will be travelling from Western Australia, with former student, Chris Drury, coming from America.
Ken Henry, a former secretary of the treasury and another ex-student, was a confirmed starter.
Some of the former teachers attending are Margaret Pryor, Alex Mills, Ron Mellon, Maurie Garland and Geoff Wooldridge.
Chatham High was established with first and second forms (now year seven and eight) in February 1965. However, the 280 students and 14 teachers had to 'board' at Taree High School while the first stages of the new school were completed.
The school drew students from the area north of Brown's Creek.
Mr McKellar said the school had a achieved much academically, culturally and on the sporting fields in 50 years and will continue to do so.
"Chatham has a proud tradition,'' he said.
The itinerary for October 3 will include a tour of the school between 9am and 1pm with the dinner to start around 5pm.
RSVP for the dinner is August 21 and more than 100 people have already indicated they'll be attending. There's further information on the Chatham High anniversary website or Facebook.
