In an interview with breakfast TV on Tuesday, Fraser, one of Australia's greatest Olympians and a former State MP suggested players like Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic, who have had troubled and controversial appearances at Wimbledon in the past week, were poor role models who needed to behave better.

"If they don't like it, go back to where their fathers or their parents came from. We don't need them here in this country if they act like that," she said.

Speaking on the Ten Network's program The Project, Christos Kyrgios was asked if Fraser's subsequent apology was acceptable. Fraser had made a statement later in the day saying "My intended message, which was not delivered as articulately as it could have been, was on a purely sporting level rather than meant as an attack on Nick's ethnicity."

"I honestly can't even describe how disappointed I was in that," Christos Kyrgios said, particularly from someone people look up to, "It's something that is for me, it's primitive".

"If you're going to talk about role models...how about being a bad role model in life," he said referring to Fraser.

"That goes against everything we stand for as a country," he said. "The apology means nothing to me to be honest. Nick's behaviour on court can be construed in many different ways  .. but that [comment from Fraser] is black and white racist to me."
