Headlining the result was the gold and silver medals on day two in the Masters 2 (35-40 years) criterium around a 1.1 klm circuit in the Griffith CBD. On the last lap of the 40 minute race the team's Taree-based Glenn Mathiske led the sprint out with around 300 metres to go while his Tamworth based team mate Phil Kelaher was planted firmly in his slipstream.
Mathiske stormed home to the finish line with Kelaher half a bike length behind in what was a brilliant finishing tactic.
"I'm just so happy that we could go one two in a State championship - this is brilliant," Mathiske said.
"We really earned this - I had shut down some breakaways through the race and Phil rode the race plan to perfection."
On the first day of competition the team's Ray Griffin almost won the 85 kilometre road race with an aggressive break away from kilometer 52. Michael Payne from Goulburn had broken away on the third of five 17 kilometre laps of the course around Griffith Airport. Payne had a one minute lead with 35.
The four Baiocchi Griffin Private Wealth cyclists all finished in the top ten of all their races. Coming back from sickness Darren Traill placed 10th in both the road race and the criterium. Mathiske and Kelaher were fourth and fifth in the road race while Ray Griffin was fourth in the criterium and fifth in his time trial where 10 seconds separated the first five riders over eighteen kilometre course.
"It's a great overall result for us at the states and follows on from Mitch Carrington's fastest time in the Nemingha to Nundle and return race the previous weekend," ream manager Ray Griffin said.
