A low pressure system off the Hunter Coast has prompted the Bureau of Meteorology to issue a dangerous surf warning for the areas stretching from Illawarra through to the Mid-North Coast Surf Life Saving NSW are urging all coastal water users to exercise caution, and check the conditions before heading out.

The dangerous surf warning has been issued for the period Monday 17 April through to Wednesday 23 April inclusive.
Swells of up to 3 metres are expected later on Monday along much of the coastline, with the Hunter likely to be particularly effected.
As well as the strong swell, gale force winds, and heavy rain are also anticipated throughout much of the state.
The southerly swell is forecast to continue moving north throughout most of this week, with a peak of up to 5 metres expected between the Illawarra and Mid-North Coast region on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Conditions are expected to ease later in the week, and extra care should also be taken by boat skippers crossing coastal bars, rockfishers, swimmers and surfers.
“We strongly encourage everyone undertaking any coastal activity to check the latest forecasts, and take some simple precautions before heading out,” NSW Life Saving Operations Manager Adam Weir said.
“Things like letting your family and friends your plans, swimming at patrolled beaches, wearing the right clothing for the conditions, and getting to know the local environment are all important factors so that everyone can enjoy their time on the coast safely.”
“The heavy rain and wind will make some coastal environments such as rock platforms slippery, and it’s important for people to be aware of how quickly conditions can change,” he said.
Some beaches may be closed due to hazardous conditions. Check the Beachsafe website for up-to-date beach information.
Flags will come down on the official patrol season for volunteer lifesavers this Sunday 26 April, however surf lifesaving assets will still be able to respond to coastal emergencies throughout the winter months.
General Safety Tips During Dangerous Surf Conditions:
Avoid rock fishing and water activities on exposed beaches/rock-shelves.
Only swim at patrolled beaches, between the red & yellow flags.
Check the official Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecast before undertaking rock fishing and water activities.
Boaties should seek advice from Marine Rescue NSW and always wear a lifejacket.
