MANNING locals have raised enough funds to shelter 100 people left homeless by Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu, with $10,000 providing 10 Shelterboxes.

The current district governor of the local Rotary District, Greg Moran of Inverell, flew to Vanuatu last Tuesday.
He will head a Shelterbox team in charge of deploying 1000 shelter boxes and 1000 shelter kits in Vanuatu over the next couple of weeks.
The United Nations is providing flights to outlying areas and helicopter transport.
“I have a full raft of reports and on ground information regarding the damage in various islands where Cyclone Pam hit,” Greg said.
“Thanks to the generosity of the Australian people, we will be able to provide accommodation for 10,000 people - 100 of them courtesy of the people of the Manning Valley - as well as providing kits to enable 1000 households to carry out repairs on their own homes.”
Shelterbox is a Rotary initiative.
The durable plastic box (itself used for purposes such as water storage) typically contains a custom-designed family tent, thermal fleece blankets, waterproof ground mats, solar light, lifestraw for water purification, mosquito nets, toolkit, children’s activity pack, water containers and cooking equipment.
The $1000 cost of a Shelterbox includes the cost of deployment to wherever it is required.
